Violent Delights.
Violent Delights is a chess-based rpg that depicts the Capulet’s masquerade in Romeo and Juliet, when the two protagonists first meet. The chess board represents the Capulet’s great chamber, and you and your partner each play a faction:
- The White pieces are the Hosts. Among them are the Capulets, including Juliet and her Nurse.
- The Black pieces are the Guests. Among them are two Montagues, Romeo and Benvolio.
Play your cast of characters, and when you capture your partner’s pieces, you may act out the scene in a Firebrands-style mini-game.
Your characters’ motivations and movements lead to one of two possible endings:
- Romeo and Juliet (the kings) meet in adjacent squares to kiss, beginning the journey to their violent end.
- The other characters trap Romeo or Juliet in social obligation (checkmate), protecting them from their innocent love.
You may feel drawn to one of these endings, but neither is your goal. Your goal is to play your characters and craft a compelling story, even if that story is not Shakespeare’s.
